Feeling in motion again. [27 Jan 2009|08:42pm]
I've been doing a lot of talking about all of the things I want to do. Its been going on for about a year and a half now- work on a farm, do an herbalism internship, travel, get more involved in the community, write more letters, learn to build with the earth. While many things have kept me from being able to just do them, the feeling that I needed to go to school has been weighing me down in ways I cant explain. In an effort to appease my parents, I've been trying to find ways to incorporate school into the things that I actually want to do, which has just lead to more stress. I finally told my mother that I will not be returning to school, plain and simple. Feels like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. Also, she said she would pay for me to do the herbalism program so I wont lose my insurance for the next year, which is pretty rad. So...now what? I'm going to do all of the things I actually really truly WANT to do. I pulled my singing saw back out, have been spending a lot of time at the library and playing with my dog, becoming good friends with some really rad ladies down the street, making stationary, thinking about friends and people I havent kept in touch with, reading lots of books, thinking. My head is filling up with hopes and dreams and ideas and beautiful things again. I'm planning on moving back to Providence with my dog (and maybe cat) the last weekend of March, finding a cheap awesome place to live with a bunch of lovely people or move back in with one of my parents, and immediately start a 7 month herbalism program with Mary Blue and get a job. I'm just trying to decide whether or not thats what I really want to do before I settle on it. 7 months is a long commitment, but after the program is over, I'd have the opportunity to go on tour with imadethismistake and Mose Giganticus in Europe. So...I'm thinking it'll be a pretty awesome thing. I'll spend the summer in Providence surrounded by sunshine, incredible people, things growing everywhere, bicycles, parties, adventures. Lots of me time. Yes, I think it will be good.

I'm done using this journal, for a little while at least. Everytime I come to write something in here, its always the same shit, me complaining. I've been working through a lot of stuff and today came to the realization that its time to stop wallowing and stop complaining and being lethargic and jaded, and until I can do that, until all this shit I've been complaining about for so long doesnt matter anymore, I dont see the purpose in bothering anyone with it. So...I'll be back when I have good things to say.

If anyone wants to be penpals with me, email me your address and I promise I'll write you tons of awesome letters.

How you can help folks arrested at the RNC! [02 Sep 2008|02:56pm]
I'm pretty sure folks from Boston & RI have been arrested. I know of one that has been confirmed...if anyone has any info or updates on these people, please let me know.

Arrest tally from Ramsey County Sheriff's Office as of 10:30 p.m. last night: 284 total; 130 felonies; 51 gross misdemeanors; 103 misdemeanors.

Many arrestees are being held without booking in the Ramsey Cty jail. Not in the system yet, told no info & they won't see judges until Wed.

12-13 people being held in a "cage" in Ramsey County Jail.

Though some people have been cited and released, the majority are still being held in jail. We’ve gotten many reports that people are not getting proper medical attention, are being refused their medication, and/or have been separated from the rest of the group.

Also, there are also many felony charges, which allow the state to hold the protesters for a longer period of time. Felony charges have historically been used as scare tactics against activists, and there is much less precedent for them to hold up in court. More often, these bogus charges are simply used to keep protesters off the streets and as a way to oppress and silence people.

Please show your support and solidarity by calling the jail at 651.266.9350 and demand that people are given proper medical attention, are given access to their medication, and are not separated from the larger group! Also, demand that arrestees’ charges are dropped and that they are released immediately! You can also call the Ramsey County Sheriff’s office at 651.487.5149 or the St. Paul Mayor’s office at 651.266.8510, as well your city council member, state representatives, etc.

Calls from jail to Cold Snap Legal Collective have been blocked - please call the jail - 651-266-9350 - and demand that they allow free calls to 651-356-8635

Check Cold Snap Legal Collective for the most up to date information.

I just sent off an email to about a billion Food Not Bombs groups all over the world. I'm going to make a zine with accounts from different groups- what their groups are like, what its like where they live, what is going on politically there, where they get their food, if they've encountered police interference...stuff like that. I'm really excited to get responses. I might even be able to include recipes from all over the world in the back! So awesome. Katrina, want to help me with this?

I posted in the dumpsterdiving community last week with pictures from a crazy hookup we made with a local natural foods store. One of the store owners saw Jake in the dumpster and offered to give us all of the food that they would be throwing out every week if we came in on Thursday or Friday. Here is this weeks haul...

9 packages of Tofurkey Keilbasas
7 packages of Smokey Tempeh
7 packages of sprouted tofu
1 bag of coffee
1 carton of Silk Soy Creamer
3 smaller cartons of soymilk creamer
1 bag of bread flour
1 bag of white whole wheat flour
1 bag of organic cane sugar
1 box of strawberry toaster pastries
2 boxes of 7 grain hot cereal
9 boxes of various types of soymilk
1 package of taco shells
4 packages of "Aloha" flavored tofu
1 package of vegan "Shanghai Dumplings"
3 containers of spicy vegan chicken salad.

Holy fuck...

More.. )

I've been reading about the No Borders camp going on right now and the tree sit to save 120 acres of land on U.C. Santa Cruz property from being bulldozed and turned into biotechnology, weapons research, and animal testing labs...

and it kills me to think that I'm just sitting here on a farm while all of these things are happening- while people are taking action to fight for these things that are so important, I'm eating yummy food and sitting on my ass and occasionally helping out with some random project in the community. I feel like its a waste of my time and there are so many more important things I should be doing.

So Jake and I are traveling...super cool!

Its just kind of weird still being in RI/MA. We are currently in Boston staying in an apartment with a bunch of really cool people. Evan Greer is playing guitar in the room next door- kind of surreal when you've listened to someones songs a bunch while in your car or room and then you're just hanging out and he's sitting in his room playing them. I really like how small and connected the New England anarchist/activist/punk community is. How everyone knows each other and you run into the same people all over the place. I am going to miss that, I think.

I really want a fire hoop.

We're heading to NYC this week after Honk Fest. Should be fun. Then to Philly, I suppose. Who knows after that. I'd really like to go work on a farm or check out an intentional community type place for a while. It's a little frustrating feeling like I'm not doing anything and have no plans to get involved in stuff soon. I don't like just "bumming around". I want to get involved and get active and connect with communities all over the country and help people and instigate some change.

Today we're going to a demo to protest HLS- Hundington Life Sciences. If you don't know anything about them, you should go find out.

There are two really really adorable kittens in the room we're staying in. :)

Rally Against Police Brutality//Providence Food Not Bombs [24 Aug 2007|10:33am]
This Sunday, August 26th, 1:30pm at the North Providence High School in North Providence, RI, there will be a rally to support Alex Svodoba and protest police brutality in RI. (See below for more info re: the events that created a need for this rally) It is so very important that you all show up to make your voices heard. This isn't just for Alex, its for everyone who wants to have a voice and not face police brutality for speaking it.

Food Not Bombs will be serving food at the rally! If anyone is interested in helping out, we need people to help dumpster food on Friday and Saturday night, as well as people to cook, transport, and serve food on Sunday at the rally. Send me an email if you want to get involved. brokencompassring (at) yahoo (dot) com.

If you're not able to get involved with the planning or cooking, we'd still love to see you at the rally! Be there. Seriously.

Police Brutality- Attack on Providence IWW

Alex is a very good friend of mine..please take a minute to read about what happened and spread the word. Due to these recent events, Food Not Bombs Providence will be postponing its first community food sharing in order to focus our efforts on supporting Alex and the IWW. Below the article is a list of things you can do to help out..so please get involved. It is so important to support those who are out there fighting for a better world and fall under the attack of police and those "in power".

A 22-year-old woman remains hospitalized following a violent conflict with police on Saturday at a protest organized by the Industrial Workers of the World labor group in Providence, Rhode Island, reports the Providence Journal.

The woman, Alexandra Svoboda, was "tackled" by police during the protest and suffered a dislocated knee. She has had one surgery to repair the damaged knee and may face another, as well as physical therapy according to the paper. (note: Alex has in fact had to get THREE surgeries and is awaiting a fourth)

The group was protesting a restaurant's use of a New York food distributor they say "is notorious for its slave labor conditions of up to 110 hours per week without basic labor rights." One of the protesters, Balthazar Ramos, said he worked for the distributor and worked "112 hours per week, was paid $4.90 per hour, and was not compensated for overtime."

Police Sgt. Michael Paiva told the Providence Journal that the protesters numbered at least 100, though the group estimates their numbers at 30-40. There was a crowd of "100 people screaming in the middle of the street, refusing to move and disobeying every order the officers gave them," Paiva told the newspaper. Paiva said that one police officer also suffered minor injuries. (note: Alex was attacked while they were following police orders to move to the sidewalk)

Labor organizer Mark Bray told the Journal that the police reaction was "was excessive and there's no excuse for it." According to police, the girl who was injured was "hitting," "kicking," and "pushing" officers. (note: Alex was grabbed and pulled/pushed by a police officer as she was walking to the sidewalk, her body and drumsticks came in contact with him, three cops then tackled her for "assualt on a police officer".)

Svoboda has been charged with three felony counts of assaulting an officer, along with two misdemeanors.

The image below depicts Svoboda being pinned by police officers after suffering her knee injury. The photo is from freelance photographer Johnathan Ives. More available at this link.

Things seem so crazy and whacked out.

I got back yesterday from a week in Maine and Vermont. Evan and I drove up to Portland to pick up Jake and ended up giving this guy Eric and his dog Grendel a ride up to Burdock as well. Burdock was pretty cool. I went to some interesting workshops on consent, DIY Womens Health, and home birth. Eric taught us how to skin a squirrel we found on the side of the road. We went swimming a bunch and ate yummy food. Jake and Ariel did fire stuff with some other people, which was really awesome. Spent a lot of time with Jake.

We were at Burdock for 5 days, then decided to go on an adventure to Vermont. Drove to Montpelier, stayed for about 10 minutes before deciding it sucked, then drove to Burlington. We walked around town for a while trying to find places to dumpster food or some people who could help us out with places to stay or best places to dumpster, etc. We met these two girls who were kind of hipster pseudo punks. They told us we could sleep in a park in front of a church, so we did. According to them, the best places to dumpster dive were Brooks (for candy) or Dunkin Donuts. Fucking gross. So we bought some food at a local co-op, then went to the park. On the way to Burlington, we found a groundhog that had been hit by a car. Jake picked it up and planned on skinning it, but by the time we got settled into the park, it was midnight and we were tired and the groundhog was starting to get bloated, so that plan failed. We left the next morning and headed to Brattleboro in search of a better place. It ended up being the best part of the trip. Everyone there was really nice and helpful towards travelers and offered lots of advice on places to sleep and where to get food. Two guys from a bakery approached Evan while he was waiting for Jake and I in Harmony Parking Lot (Yes, like the Johnny Hobo song..we felt like total dorks for being excited about that) and offered him a bunch of free bread and cookies. We were pointed in the direction of the railroad tracks and told of a place called "Hobo Heaven". We explored the tracks, found some animal bones, and eventually found Hobo Heaven after the sun went down. We were all pretty sketched out by the place, so we walked back and set up our sleeping bags on a loading dock 10 feet from the tracks. We waved at freight trains as they rolled by and got excited about traveling. We smashed coins underneath their wheels, took railroad spikes and pulled up dated nails. We ate tomato, avocado and hommus sandwiches and went to sleep. The next morning we went back to Portland.

Portland was fun as well..hung out at Grant St., which is essentially no more. Helped Ani hide from the landlord and move all everything out of the apartment. Went dumpster diving at the Odwalla Distro center and the Naked Juice dumpster (which yielded endless packages of tomato red pepper tortillas). The next day hung out and went to a vegan pizza party at Park Ave then went to the Gift of Tounges practice space to listen to them practice. Afterwards, Jake and I camped out in Kelsey's backyard. Evan and I left the next morning.

So now I'm home. Things feel out of place and crazy. Found out that Alex got her knee broken by some cops during the Jackies Galaxie march. (See my myspace blog for more info) I miss Jake. I miss feeling free and alive and empowered.

I've been battling self confidence issues for a while now and everything feels right when I'm away from this place. I feel like I can be myself and I feel strong and secure and confident. But I find that everytime I return home, those feelings of inferiority and being self concious pop back up and crawl all inside of me. I feel under the control of my parents and I hate that.

I have to talk to my mom soon about what I'm doing after I turn 18. Right now, the plan is for Jake to come visit from August 30th-September 6th, then I'll go back up to Maine with him and we'll go to Vermont from September 10th-16th for a skillshare on our friends land, then come back to RI from the 16th-20th for my birthday, then go back up to Maine for the Common Ground Fair from the 20th-23rd, then to Portland for Jakes birthday on the 24th...then we leave. We leave to travel and learn things and meet people and explore the country. It's kind of scary and really exciting. I know we're going to do it, but I'm really scared to talk to my mom about it. She's going to want a comprehensive plan and know exactly where we're going and how we're getting there and what we're doing. I almost feel like its going to have to come down to "Mom, I'm leaving. I'm doing what I want to do. I'm sorry if you don't approve of it." But thats a scary thing. My mom has always been so supportive of me in everything I do. We have such a good relationship that its hard for me to do something that would upset or worry her. I just don't know how to approach it.

I feel like I need to go do something and go somewhere.
